Thomas Whelan serves as Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Head of Corporate Development for Coeur Mining. Since joining the company in 2019, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening Coeur’s financial foundation, enhancing operational performance, and helping drive the company’s strategic growth.

Mr. Whelan has more than two decades of mining and financial leadership experience. Prior to joining Coeur, he served as Chief Financial Officer for two mining companies and spent more than 22 years with Ernst & Young, where he was a partner and served as both the Global Mining & Metals Assurance Leader and Canadian Mining & Metals Assurance Leader. His extensive accounting, audit, and industry expertise has helped elevate Coeur’s financial reporting, governance practices, investor communications, and capital management capabilities.

As CFO, Mr. Whelan led efforts to enhance the company’s balance sheet strength and liquidity during a period of significant investment, including the completion of a major mine expansion during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through disciplined cash management, innovative financing initiatives, and prudent risk management strategies, Coeur significantly improved its financial flexibility while advancing key growth projects.

Mr. Whelan has also transformed the company’s performance management and capital allocation processes by introducing return-focused incentive metrics, strengthening investment evaluation standards, improving transparency around exploration spending, and implementing robust post-investment review practices. These efforts have reinforced a culture focused on value creation, accountability, and long-term shareholder returns.

Beyond finance, Mr. Whelan works closely with operational leadership across Coeur’s portfolio, regularly visiting mine sites to review business performance, risk management, safety, and environmental stewardship initiatives. His combination of financial rigor and operational engagement has helped improve decision-making across the organization and support stronger business outcomes.

Under his leadership, Coeur’s financial disclosures and external communications have become widely recognized as industry leading. He has further strengthened relationships with investors, lenders, rating agencies, insurers, and other key stakeholders through a disciplined and transparent approach to financial management.

In recent years, Mr. Whelan’s responsibilities expanded to include leadership of the company’s corporate development function and strategic growth initiatives. In this capacity, he has successfully led two multi-billion transformative public-company acquisitions in the past two years and advanced key development projects, helping position Coeur for long-term growth and value creation.
